River City Truck Parts Celebrates 35 Years of Serving the Heavy-Duty Parts Industry

River City Truck Parts was founded by Paul Dailey and Jimmy McWhorter on August 1st, 1987.

During the 1970’s and 80’s, Paul and Jimmy gained knowledge and experience in the diesel parts industry working various locations throughout Tennessee, Kentucky, and Indiana. By the mid 1980’s they identified an opportunity to venture on their own, specializing in new and used diesel core engines, engine components, transmissions, differentials, and all associated parts.

How it all began

Jimmy McWhorter joined the Air Force when he was eighteen and after serving for four years he returned to Knoxville, Tennessee. Shortly thereafter, he got a job in Knoxville working for a Kenworth truck dealership. Working at the dealership, Jimmy learned about warehousing, inventory control and purchasing relative to the heavy-duty truck industry. After 10 years with the dealership in Knoxville, Jimmy accepted a position at a Ford truck dealership in Louisville, KY as parts manager. There, he gained more knowledge of how cores affect businesses. After five years at the Ford dealer, Jimmy decided he could influence the landscape of the heavy-duty diesel core supply and help people throughout the world with their core and parts needs.

Jimmy started out by selling rebuilt clutches and some rebuilt parts as well as new parts. He then went on the road and applied his purchasing experience by buying parts that he knew he could sell in a profitable manner. Like many start-up businesses, at the beginning Jimmy did everything himself – including the buying, transporting, selling, and marketing of truck parts. His hard work laid the foundation for River City Truck Parts’ business model.

In 1987, Jimmy partnered with his co-worker from All State Ford, Paul Dailey, and together they founded River City Truck Parts. Jimmy would continue to do the purchasing and inventory control while Paul would focus on marketing the business and selling parts.

Finding the right location

River City Truck Parts’ first location was in Jimmy’s 2-car garage at his house. The first official building location was a 2400 sqft block building on Old Fern Valley Road. In 1990, they moved to a 6000 sqft building on a ½ acre lot on Ulrich Avenue. In 1999, they purchased the 17-acre property they thrive on today just south of Louisville on the west side of Interstate 65. The property was originally used as a horse ring and riding stable. They turned the grandstand into the main office and after their first parts auction in 2002, they realized that they needed to lay a long term foundation to grow their business. They got busy, hired some local contractors and the rest is history. “This was the best move we could have ever made” states Derek McWhorter, Jimmy’s son, and current president of the company (2014). “We built our first building and moved our sales team to the new facility in early 2005”.

Jimmy and Paul not only laid the foundation for a profitable business model within the heavy-duty parts industry, but they also leveraged their passion for innovation and people in order to build a solid forward-thinking culture that is still going strong today. In 1997, they participated in their first Mid-American Trucking Show to make new industry contacts and to get their brand out to the industry.

Passing a Legacy of Business and Values

Jimmy’s sons, Derek and Daniel, both grew up in the business and learned the industry through guidance from their father, a lot of hard work, and firsthand experience. Both sons wanted to continue building on the foundation, core values, and mission that their father began. So in 2014, they entered into a deal to retire Jimmy’s long-term partner, Paul Dailey.

Being a father with two sons, it was very natural for Jimmy to include them into the growing business. Jimmy would bring them to the property to learn and help where they could. He also took them with him on road trips to find and buy parts through the United States. At age twelve, Derek McWhorter, now president, began buying parts on his own. Derek’s brother, Daniel, followed suit and they both literality grew up “in the business” learning the value of hard work in an industry that demonstrates it on a daily basis.

Daniel McWhorter puts it this way , “Having grown up in the industry, I’ve learned to appreciate the hard work that it takes to grow a sustainable business. I also really like dealing with the other hard-working people in our industry and building long-term relationships with them. It is also great to be a part of an industry that is so essential to every aspect of modern life.”

These days Derek and Daniel continue to grow and expand upon the dream of Jimmy’s and Paul’s to help keep trucks moving and to maintain as one of the Best Heavy duty diesel core suppliers in the world! Both Derek and Daniel have grown into very solid leaders. This is demonstrated by the consistent growth over the last several years and the knowledgeable, reliable, and dedicated workforce employed there today! They continue to grow the business in many aspects. Last year they completed a massive expansion project, expanding their property from 14 to 17 acres. This will allow them to manage a vast inventory of heavy-duty truck parts, cores, and engines as well as other accessories.

2021 marks the 35 ^th year in business for River City Truck Parts Inc. The business continues to go strong under the leadership of Derek and Daniel. Derek serves as president and Daniel serves as vice president. Derek focuses on all the CEO functions such as revenue growth, marketing, sales, purchasing and the future direction of the company. Daniel focuses on inventory management, team development, and oversees all aspect of the operations. They both have unified strong core values that were passed on from their dad and Paul. These values have enabled them to build and continue to grow a team of quality, hardworking people that truly care about their customers and industry. “We could not do what we do, at the highest level of service, without our Team. Mid-America Trucking Show Celebrates 50th Anniversary

MATS began in 1972 when Paul K. Young, former Kentucky Motor Transport Association President, and a few industry friends had an idea to develop a show in the eastern half of the United States. Their goal was to create an event that was more accessible to professionals in the heavy-duty trucking industry, specifically owner-operators and fleets. Their idea and hard work laid the foundation for what would become the largest heavy-duty trucking tradeshow in the world.

Since the beginning their goal remains to bring the entire industry together for the largest and most comprehensive, face-to-face event in trucking. Over the years MATS has been an intricate part of the trucking industry with thousands of stories people making industry connections and lasting friendships.

Team Member Spotlight – Daniel McWhorter

Daniel grew up in the business and began working at River City part-time when he was 15. After high school, Daniel went to the University of Louisville to study History with a focus on Sociology. He also took several business classes and has since received his BA from U of L.

At the age of 25, Daniel began working in the business full-time and earned the role of Vice President in 2014. Daniel’s main role is to oversee every aspect of the operations. He leads his team in managing the vast inventory relative to the overall vision and mission of the company.

Derek McWhorter (President), says – “Working with my brother by my side has been a great experience. I am grateful to work with him on a daily basis. We usually work on different aspects of the business with the focus of growing it for the long term future. Working with family can be difficult at times because each person has different beliefs and directions. We work great together because our belief is that the business is more important than who’s right and who’s wrong.”

Here are some questions that we asked Daniel:

What do you like most about your current role with River City Truck Parts?

A major part of our operations is inventory control and management and I really like teaching and helping my team to organize and improve our inventory and process. I enjoy working with and developing a great team with a “do whatever it takes” attitude. This type of determination allows us to make progress every day. I also like traveling with Dad (Jimmy McWhorter) to purchase parts as well as build relationships with vendors across the country.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

Sometimes it is a challenge to be patient when I can envision where I’d like our inventory management to be, but the process of getting there is not as fast as I’d like. However, I have learned that being patient, following a process, and taking the time to do things the right way is best for the business long term.

As a leader and owner of the business it can be hard to find the right balance between working on the business and working in it. Since I like to be hands-on in terms of helping my team, it’s important to make sure I don’t go too deep into the weeds. Also, having enough labor can be a challenge, but since we have an awesome team we can usually take our time in finding the right folks to join the RCTP family.

What do you like most about the heavy-duty parts Industry?

Having grown up in the industry I’ve learn to appreciate the hard work that it takes to grow a sustainable business. I also really like dealing with the other hard-working people in our industry and building long-term relationships with them. It also great to be a part of an industry that is so essential to ever aspect of modern life.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

I like spending time with my family. I also like to travel. I have twin boys and we love to do things together like going to the gym and spending time outdoors in nature.

When Should You Replace Your Camshaft?

2020 was a long hard year for our industry and many trucks logged a record number of miles. Therefore, it might be time to consider an engine overhaul. When you decide that it’s time for a diesel engine overhaul, you typically know the parts that must be replaced. However, your camshaft is a gray area and can often get overlooked. Truth is – a high mileage camshaft needs to receive just as much care as any other standard replaceable part during the rebuild process.

When there is visible wear and tear, like on the video below, it makes the decision a lot easier. This type of wear on your rockers doesn’t let the valves open all the way which causes loss of power. Also, the discoloration typically means lack of oil. This causes excess heat which leads to engine performance failure.

However, quite often your camshaft can be worn out beyond its reuse limit without obvious signs of wear and tear. This makes it a difficult decision, so asking yourself these questions might prove helpful:

In summary, don’t overlook your camshaft when overhauling your engine. Consider all the variables that determine the condition of your camshaft, then weigh the long-term cost of a camshaft replacement against keeping what you have.

Managing the receiving of inventory keeps me on my toes and is never boring. I also enjoy working with heavy duty truck parts. Working on motors of all types has always be a passion of mine.

What do you like about the River City Truck Parts leadership?

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

Staying on top of the heavy-duty truck parts industry standards is very challenging. I could literally work 24/7. Therefore, properly managing and prioritizing my time is very important and not always easy to do.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

I like spending time with my son. We love riding dirt bikes and four wheelers. I also like working on motors and spending time in the outdoors.

The Differences Between a Heavy Duty Used and Remanufactured Transmissions.

There are several factors to consider when comparing used and remanufactured transmissions. In this article we explain some of the key differences to help you make informed decisions when replacing a transmission or any other heavy duty truck parts for that matter.

Pros and Cons . The main benefit of buying a used transmission is the initial cost savings since used is less expensive than remanufactured. Sometimes a used transmission is more readily available for a fast repair to get back on the road. Also, if your core is not like-for-like, it may be more cost effective. A remanufactured part will last longer, thus providing longer term costs savings. Therefore, it is wise to consider how long you plan to use the part when making your decision because the main con to a used part is a shorter running life then a REMAN.

A properly remanufactured transmission is as close to new as you can possibly get. With all the moving parts in a transmission, it is important to make sure what you are purchasing is built with quality workmanship. There are a few terms used in the industry that describe how extensively a transmission has been gone through. Reconditioned, Rebuilt, and Remanufactured are “terms” that are sometimes loosely stated to customers and you may not be getting the quality transmission you are expecting. A Reconditioned transmission has typically been inspected and only the parts that need to be replaced are replaced. Rebuilt typically means that a unit has been disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled with all used parts and possibly new bearings and seals. Remanufactured is an extremely thorough process. A core transmission will have been completely disassembled, cleaned and magnaflux inspected for cracks. The parts that are reused meet or exceed OEM specifications. Gearing that is reused, most of the time will be remated with its original running mate. Once all components are inspected and ready for reassembly, OEM procedures are followed, and the units are assembled with quality checks in place and are properly lubed and sealed. These units typically carry a one- or two-year warranty on manufacturer defective workmanship and defective parts.

In summary, buying a used transmission is a good option if the initial cost is an important issue. If going for longevity and you have the financial means to do so, a remanufactured transmission is the way to go.

I love working with engines and the technologies in the industry are everchanging. I get to continue learning about all the moving parts that make them perform at their best. It’s also a great feeling to know you’ve helped someone get back on the road after an engine failure or breakdown.

I’ve known the McWhorter family since I was very young. They are great people that truly care about the team on both a professional and personal level. What is the most challenging thing about your job?

Staying on top of the new technologies is challenging. It’s a good challenge because, as I said before, I really enjoy learning about engines, parts, and high-performance motors.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

I enjoy spending time with my family. We like going to the lake and doing other outdoor activities. I also like driving and working on my 2001 Ford Mustang Bullitt.

Signs of a Failing Cylinder Head

A properly working cylinder head is vital to the overall function of your engine. The cylinder head creates the combustion chamber that powers your engine. When it isn’t working properly, the entire engine works harder than it’s supposed to in order to compensate for the loss of this power. Therefore, it is very important to understand the symptoms of a failing cylinder head. Below are the top symptoms to watch for:

Overheating

Overheating is the most common symptom of a failing cylinder head. In most cases this is caused by coolant loss, a leaky head gasket, or restricted flow of coolant. It’s also a good idea to make sure your radiator is full and in good condition to prevent overheating from happening.

Oil Leaks

If your engine has started leaking oil, especially between the head deck and the block, then the head gasket is probably failing. However, in extreme cases, it could be a cracked or damaged cylinder head which can result in destroying the entire engine.

Poor Performance and Misfires

If your cylinder head is not functioning properly, it will most likely result in a loss of power for your engine and this will be the most obvious when accelerating.

Smoky Exhaust

If smoke is coming from your exhaust, that is a good indication that you could have a cracked cylinder head. If this is the case, then the crack and sequential damage are most likely going to be a lot more severe.

Once you have determined that your cylinder head is failing, then you will need to decide the best option for your situation. REMAN is typically the best route to go here and below is an overview video of our cylinder head REMAN process.

Being in sales is never boring. I get to deal with so many different people, and because of the complexity of our industry, I am always learning something new. I also like being in a position to really help customers get what they need even if it means “going the extra mile” for them. I also like being able to stand behind what I sell and build long-lasting relationships with our customers.

What do you like about the River City Truck Parts leadership?

Their current leadership is a 2 ^nd generation from father (Jimmy McWhorter) to his sons. I like that they grew up in the industry. They not only understand all the “ins and outs” of the business, they also truly care about doing things the right way in order to have a positive impact on the trucking and transportation industry. They also care about the team and treat us like family. They inspire me to work hard every day to grow my sales. I want them to be proud that they have placed their trust in me.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

The heavy-duty truck parts industry is very complex, and it is difficult to know everything. I learn something new every day. This helps me serve our customers well by helping them solve their specific problem. Since I really like to learn new things, it is easy for me to embrace this challenge. I believe that continuous learning keeps my mind healthy and fresh.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

I love to travel! I like to go camping, fishing, off roading, pretty much anything outdoors. Also, woodworking is a hobby that I enjoy. I am a single father with two daughters ages 12 and 16, so I spend as much time with them as I can during my off time.

Are you originally from the Louisville, Kentucky area?

Yes, I have lived here all my life and while I have had some opportunities to move to different cities, I am glad I have stayed in the area. It’s a great place to live and I like being close to my daughters.

Development is underway in the expansion of our grounds and facility. We currently have the largest inventory of truck parts in the Louisville, Kentucky area. But as our business grows so does our inventory selection. Therefore, we are expanding our grounds from 14 to 17 acres.

We are grateful to be part of a thriving industry and really enjoy working with our customers. We continuously look for ways to improve the business. This expansion, along with some other facility improvements, will allow us to streamline our processes and maintain a massive inventory selection.

How does your oil cooler work?

Your oil cooler does exactly what it sounds like, it cools down the oil running through your engine. For proper performance, your oil cooler must be in working order no matter the driving conditions. The cooled oil is used to cool down multiple components such as the crankshaft, bearings, camshaft, rods, and pistons. This cooling can impact overall performance. It helps keep the engine running smoothly, during hot weather and on long-haul trips, which is typically when things tend to breakdown, overheat, or have problems. Although most drivers never consider oil cooler maintenance, keeping them in working order by changing the engine coolant and oil at the recommended intervals will help reduce wear and tear on the engine. How does a Turbo Charger Work?

The turbocharger has 3 main components:

The turbine uses the heat and pressure from the engines exhaust gas and converts it to energy, rotating the turbine wheel. The turbine has two parts to it, the wheel and housing. The turbine wheel converts exhaust energy providing power to drive the compressor. The turbine housing collects the exhaust gases from the engine and directs it to the turbine wheel making it rotate.

The compressor raises the intake pressure, allowing the engine to breathe, and enables the cylinders to get extra air. The compressor also increases air density. This allows a higher mass of air and increases the fuel utilization which in return gives more power.

The bearing system is what supports the shaft that connects the turbine to the compressor. The system endures a lot of stress, as the turbine and compressor can reach speeds of 100,000 rpm. If pressure differences occur between the turbine and the compressor, it can lead to a good turbo failing.

Brake failure is the most common cause for accidents involving semi trucks. The brake systems are the most vital and critical component on these 80,000 pound vehicles that can never be checked enough. Below are some tips to help assure you are taking the proper precautions on the road.

Replacing Brakes Regularly – The brake shoes on a truck are equipped with an indicator built into the pads that will warn you when it is time for a replacement. When you are replacing your pads, you should also replace springs, pins, and bushings. When the brake shoes are replaced, be sure to replace the drums as well. Drums are prone to wear, and they can begin to develop heat cracks.

Grease S Cams & Slack Adjusters – Trucks have 2 types of slack adjusters; manual or automatic. Slack Adjusters are what work to keep your brakes in alignment during use. The slack adjusters turn a shaft that then turns the S cam. The S cams responsibility is to push the brake shoe into the drum to stop the truck. Regardless the type of adjuster you have, it needs to be greased to work properly and efficiently, as well as the bushings in the S cams.

Check the Air System Pressure Gauge – The ideal pressure reading for your truck should be between 100-125 PSI. Checking the pressure gauge is very important in determining if you should service your brakes or stop driving the truck all together until the brakes are serviced or replaced. If the pressure gauge is reading anywhere between 60-100, you should have your brakes serviced. If your pressure gauge is reading under 60, stop driving the truck immediately until that brakes are serviced or replaced.

Check Linings and Hoses – Be sure that all linings and hoses are dry and free of lubricants or fluids. If you see any soaked lines or hoses, they should be replaced. Also make sure to look for any hoses that are worn or damaged, as they will need to be replaced as well.

One good rule of thumb is to check your brakes every time you get your oil changed. This will help you stay on top of services.

The Vintage Tractor Pulling Nationals was everything but boring. From the delicious Spudz snacks to the various flavors of Moonpie Moonshine. Lets not forget the reason we went to Freedom Hall in the first place, to see who had the baddest tractor!

The weekend was filled with motors revving and dirt flying. Our very own Derek McWhorter pulled on Sunday using our M35 Truck with a small cam Cummins. We are very proud to announce that he came in first place in the category! You can watch the video on our Facebook page here .
